The Titan’s Curse by Rick Riordan
Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Book 3
Audience: 9 and up
Rating: A-
Synopsis:
Percy, Annabeth, and Grover are back, but this time they’re joined by a new godling: Thalia. When a friend is in danger and a goddess is held captive, Percy and friends do what they do best: they go on a quest. New prophesies, friends, gods and goddess; new adventures, dangers, and threats make The Titan’s Curse a great adventure story that you’ll want to read in one sitting!
Chatter:
(Spoiler Alerts! ) Now this is what a sequel should be like! The Titan’s Curse was a much stronger book than The Sea of Monsters! I loved the new characters and the way that this story really moved the plot forward. I can’t wait until The Battle of the Labyrinth comes out to see what is going to happen next.
My favorite new character is Apollo – he’s hilarious! I challenge you all to write a Percy Jackson Haiku. You can post them below. (Remember a Haiku has three lines with: 5 syllables, 7 syllables, 5 syllables). I can’t wait to read them!
There was much more mushy stuff between Percy and Annabeth in this book, but there were also a couple new obstacles introduced: 1) Athena doesn’t approve of even a friendship between the two, 2) Annabeth has hinted a few times that the way Percy feels about her is how she feels about Luke. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the coming battles. I predict that Annabeth will at some point be faced with a choice of saving Percy or saving Luke. Who will she choose?
Thalia is an interesting character; she’s a lot like Percy, but much more like Zoë. She has so much anger against her father, but there wasn’t much evidence to explain why. Was she brave to choose the life of a huntress rather than turn 16 and have the prophecy be about her or was this cowardice? I’m undecided.
One thing I firmly believe is when Percy says that he chooses the prophecy. I do not think it could possibly be about Nico.
Another thing that I found very strange was how supportive and loving Annabeth’s family was. They did not match the description she gave in The Lightning Thief at all! Her mortal father, who couldn’t keep his human children straight, faced monsters in order to save her. That is not the act of a father who doesn’t want her. Interesting…
Questions:
In your opinion, who is the best hero? Why?
Do you think that Thalia should have joined the hunt?
Who do you think helped Nico and Bianca escape from Lotus Casino?
Do you think Rachel Elizabeth Dare will be important in the other stories?
Is Bianca really dead? What do you think happened to her?
Challenge: Write a new Greek mythology haiku (see guidelines in “Chatter”)
Get ready! The Battle of the Labyrinth (Percy Jackson and the Olympians book 4) comes out May 6th. You can pre-order it at Amazon right now by clicking here.

Tom Says:
In answer to the Lotus Casino question. My obvious answer is whoever took them there released them as well but I am not quite sure who that would be Charon possibly, Hades himself, or a member of the Kronos clan. Tough to tell but it will be exciting to see what happens in the coming book. Can’t wait till May!!!
