Shakespeare's Scribe Cover

The Shakespeare Stealer Series: Book 2

Audience: 10 and up

Rating: B

Synopsis:

Widge is finally beginning to feel comfortable with his role in the theater group when something arrives to upset everything. The plague is appearing in the city and all theaters must be closed until the illness passes. The Lord Chamberlain’s Men, the acting troupe the Widge (and William Shakespeare) belong to, decides to escape the city and the plague and go on a tour of the countryside. In their travels the troupe meets all sorts of danger, and a suspicious man who claims to know Widge’s past. When Widge is torn between his old family and new one, what will he choose?

Chatter:

(Spoiler Alerts! ) This book had more action than the first story did, mostly because of the changing scenes. I wasn’t surprised that Nick ended up becoming the villain of this tale too – I figured he wasn’t done tormenting the Lord Chamberlain’s Men yet. I wonder if he’ll turn up in the third book as well.

One character that I was disappointed didn’t turn up was Julia. I’m curious to see how she’s adapted to life in France and if she’s found success on the stage there. Maybe she’ll reappear in the final book.

Jamie Redshaw and Sal Pavy were interesting additions to the cast. Both of them are a mix of good and bad. I wanted to hate them, but at the same time, they had some redeeming characteristics. I doubt we’ll see any more of Jamie, but it will be interesting to see how Sal adapts to the troupe once they’re back in London.

Sanders’ death was so sad. I think it’s going to be hard for Widge to go on without his best friend. It will really change the relationships in the theater and also in Mr. Pope’s house because Widge will have to assume more responsibility. I predict Tetty will have a bigger role in the next book because I can’t figure out any other reason for Blackwood to introduce her as a new character.

Questions:

Will Sal and Widge ever become friends?

How will Widge’s life change now that Sanders has died?

Do you think Widge will ever learn more about his past?
