Enna Burning by Shannon Hale
Books of Bayern: Book 2
Audience: 10 and up
Rating: A
Synopsis:
Set in the same country as Goose Girl, this book is told from the prospective of Enna. While Isi is a major character, she doesn’t steal Enna’s thunder… or rather, her fire. While Isi has wind and animal speak, Enna stumbles into a language more powerful and destructive: fire speech. Meanwhile, Bayern is at war with neighboring Tira. Enna believes that her new powers can help save the country… until she is captured and falls for the enemy… until her the fire begins to consume and destroy her.
Chatter:
(Spoiler Alerts! ) While reading Goose Girl, I barely paid any attention to Enna. She was a good friend to Isi, but beyond that I didn’t really think of her as a heroine. So, I was surprised to see that I enjoyed Enna Burning much more than Goose Girl (and if you read my review, you’ll see that I really liked Goose Girl).
Enna was a more dynamic heroine. She was much more take-charge and action oriented than Isi was. I also really enjoyed how Enna struggled with her powers. While Isi also was tormented by the wind, her approach was much more passive than Enna’s battles.
Sileph was an interesting character and added another dimension to the plot. Of course I wanted Enna to end up with Finn, but there were moments when Sileph’s smooth-talking had me doubting this. I kept questioning whether or not his feelings for Enna were true. It was interesting to note that he talked more about Enna being ‘his,’ than he did about loving her.
I can’t wait to read River Secrets! Be on the lookout for a new post about it soon…
Questions:
Does Sileph ever truly care for Enna?
Who is the better friend: Enna or Isi?
Which book did you prefer: Goose Girl or Enna Burning?
If you could choose any of the speech styles, which one would you want?
