The Battle of the Labyrinth by Rick Riordan
Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Book 4
Audience: 9 and up
Rating: B+
Synopsis:
Camp Half-Blood is in grave danger. Luke, Kronos and his evil army are planning to attack and destroy all the godlings. Their plan: breach the camp’s protected boundaries by using the Labyrinth to enter. IF they can find their way through the maze, the campers have no chance! The only people that can stop them are our questing heroes: Annabeth, Percy, Tyson, and Grover. This time they’ll also have help from a *gasp* mortal! But in order to beak Luke and Kronos, the heroes will also have to enter the Labyrinth and nothing and no one is what it seems in this mythical maze.
Chatter:
(Spoiler Alerts! ) I’m pretty proud of how accurate my predictions from The Titan’s Curse were! Annabeth is certainly torn up about her feelings about Luke and Percy. Also, Rachel Elizabeth Dare did reappear and she plays a rather important role. I doubt we’ve seen the last of her…
I missed Thalia in the story. I’m sure she’ll reappear somewhere in the series, but I missed her and Percy’s warring in this plot. Of course, Percy had more than enough females to keep him company! Aphrodite is keeping her promise of making Percy’s love life complicated: Rachel, Calypso… and Annabeth! Percy continues to be frustratingly clueless, but I bet he’ll figure it out eventually.
Annabeth experienced the same problem Percy had in the first book – trying to decipher her prophecy by herself. Her fear of losing Percy led her to act a certain why, but she ended up losing Luke instead. Now she feels so guilty for feeling relief that it wasn’t Percy and torn about her thoughts about friend-turned-enemy Luke. I wish Luke had been given the time with Annabeth that he requested – maybe he could have explained to her what he was doing and why.
Now that Kronos is back, Camp Half-Blood and Mount Olympus are going to be in constant danger. This book kept bringing up that this isn’t really a battle of good versus evil. Neither side really fits wholly into the ‘good’ category. I bet this will be a major theme in the upcoming books as characters are forced to question their loyalties. But for right now, I’m just happy for Percy that his dad showed up to his birthday party and call him “his favorite son.”
Questions:
What price do you think Annabeth will have to pay for bringing 4 people on her quest?
Was Annabeth a good leader on her quest?
Who do you think helped Nico and Bianca escape from Lotus Casino? Will Nico be okay on his own?
Do you think Ethan will be important in the other stories? Will Rachel?
