The Dairy Queen Series: Book 1

Audience: Middle School

Rating: B+

Synopsis:

DJ has enough responsibility for three high school students! She’s in charge of doing all the farm work on her family’s dairy farm while her father recovers from an injury. She’s failing English. Her younger brother won’t speak to anyone and her older brothers are in a feud with her father. The last thing she needs is to worry about training the quarterback from the rival town’s football team. Or is it the best thing for her? As DJ spends more time with Brian, he teaches her the importance of speaking up for herself and figuring out just what it is that will make her happy.

Chatter:

(Spoiler Alerts! ) DJ changed so much in the course of this book. I was so glad that by the end of the book she wasn’t so focused on the negatives of her situation. She was no longer focused on how stupid and unattractive she was. Instead she had started to believe in herself and to believe that she could handle the situations that came her way.

The one area that she wasn’t able to find this level of confidence was with Brian, which was disappointing because he can take credit for her improved self-confidence in other areas. I was sad to see that DJ was hoping that she and Brian would be friends. Why was she still in doubt that they could ever be more than that?

DJ was also more aware of the things going on around her. She had begun to understand the reasons for Curtis’s silence. She also realized that there was more to her dad than she realized, and she learned that her mom was secretly communicating with her brothers. Before the summer DJ was so self-focused that she hadn’t even realized that her best friend was in love with her. By the conclusion, she’d not only become less self focused, she was seeing her family members more clearly and better able to communicate with them.

Questions:

Why do you think Bill came to DJ’s game, but not Win?

Will Brian and DJ be friends or more than?

What was the biggest lesson DJ learned during the summer?

There’s a sequel called THE OFF SEASON! I can’t tell you how excited I was to see a sequel to Dairy Queen. When I first finished Dairy Queen, I liked it, but I didn’t think I loved it. Then I couldn’t get the characters out of my head for the next week. I missed them! So when I saw that there was a sequel, it made my day!

I’m going to get THE OFF SEASON tomorrow and you can look for a post about it soon!

    Paige
