I’d Tell You I Love You, But Then I’d Have to Kill You by Ally Carter

Gallagher Girls: Book 1
Audience: Middle School
Rating: A-
Synopsis:
Cammie goes to your typical private all-girls school… if the typical girls’ school taught 14 languages and classes in covert operations. Gallagher Academy is a school for training future spies and Cammie’s education is on the right track. Or it was until someone notices her on a secret mission… someone male, attractive, and super sweet. Cammie knows how to do reconnaissance, escape from captors, and translate into Aramaic, but she has no idea how to talk to boys. Cammie’s new secret mission involves going into ‘deep cover,’ but as her lies get more complicated, her new boyfriend becomes more charming. Will Cammie blow both her relationship and future career by bungling this mission?
Chatter:
(Spoiler Alerts! ) This book is like Alex Rider for girls… but better. Or maybe I only think that because I’m a girl. I love the Alex Rider books, but I always wanted to know more about how he’d be trained and his gadgets. More about what he’s thinking and not just all the action-y, adventure-y missions. Well, in Ally Carter’s book, she provides an in-depth look at another type of teenage spy – female this time, and the introductory novel goes beyond just missions.
I love that Cammie struggles to balance being a girl in love, with having time for friends, keeping up with classes, being a spy, and living up to her parents expectations. This is totally an experience I can really relate to. Well, not the spy part, but balancing boys, school, parents and school. I also like how each of her friends has their own personality. Bex, Macey and Liz are each well developed. I hope we get more of their back-stories.
Another character that I’m curious to learn about is Mr. Solomon. Is he interested in Cammie’s mom, or was that just part of his barn dance cover? He claims to ‘owe’ something to Cammie’s father, but what?
So, Josh. I’m really hopeful that he’ll remember Cammie, but that comment about the tea was ominous. I hope that Cammie just asks her mother rather than this turning into some long drawn out part of the second book’s plot. If Cammie’s mom did drug Josh, it makes all her talk about love a little hypocritical. How could she want Cammie to experience love and then drug the guy who loves her? We’ll just hope that Josh turns up in book two forgiving and adorable!
Questions:
Will Josh remember Cammie? Will he forgive her?
Will Macey fit in at Gallagher Academy?
Should Cammie continue to study Covert Ops?
What happened to Cammie’s dad?
