Rating: B+
Synopsis:
The Beaumonts are no ordinary family. On their 13th birthdays, they receive much more than gifts wrapped in paper: they receive their savvy – an unusual and unique power. Mibs brothers already have their savvies; one is electrically charged and the other creates hurricanes. She’s been dreaming of her turn and her savvy for years and finally her birthday is arriving. But when Mibs’ father is in an accident days before her birthday, her wishes change. Now all she wants is a savvy that can save him.
Chatter:
(Spoiler Alerts! ) This book was wonderfully fun and magical. The plot description in the front cover didn’t initially strike me as captivating, but I was hooked as soon as I started reading the book. I loved the relationship between Fish and Mibs – and felt bad for Rocket, who could neither scumble, nor did he seem to have the close relationship that the other siblings shared.
Will was a charming character – how sweet was the scene when he drew the sun on his palm? I’d love to hear the story from his point of view – wouldn’t it be great to hear how someone learns and deals with the truth about the Beaumont family?
The ending was bittersweet. There was the sweet: Poppa lives and comes home; Fish returns to school; Momma’s pregnant. There was the bitter: Rocket leaving home; Poppa’s addled brain. I’m conflicted about how I feel about the ending. It might have been too cheesy if Poppa had made a full recovery, plus Mibs is still able to communicate with Miss Mermaid, so I guess this is rather good resolution.
I did some poking around and didn’t find any information about whether or not the Savvy series will be continued. Would you love to know more about Rocket’s struggles to scrumble? I know I would! Hopefully Ingrid Law will write more about the Beaumonts and their savvies!
Questions:
If you could have a savvy, what would it be?
What do you think Sampson’s savvy will be?
What would be the hardest part of Mibs’ savvy?
