Tunnels by Roderick Gordan and Brian Williams
Audience: Elementary and up
Rating: A-
Synopsis:
Will has always noticed that his family doesn’t quite fit together. The one interest he shares with his father is an interest in digging and archeological finds. What he doesn’t realize that there are mysterious reasons that his family seems so hodge-podge and that his interest in digging is going to land him in a dilemma from which there is no returning. This book has a bit of a City of Ember feel, so if you’re a fan of that book, you’d probably like Tunnels.
Chatter:
(Spoiler Alerts! ) Is it just me, or were you almost relieved that Will can’t to back to being a topsider? What’s left for him above ground besides bullies? But then again, what’s left for him underground besides the Styx and death? And least in the Deeps he has Cal, Chester, and hopefully they’ll find his father.
Through Cal’s eyes, I could see why the Colonists hate the Topsiders. But from Will’s eyes, living underground wasn’t so appealing either. Maybe the Deeps aren’t actually awful – maybe they’re actually a paradise. But I think that’s just wishful thinking because I don’t know how the characters are going to get out of their dilemma alive.
The fact that Rebecca turned out to be a Styx was both shocking and logical. In retrospect, it fit. But I never would have guessed it ahead of time! I’m wondering if there’s more to Will’s adopted mom than just a TV-obsessed waste and I’d like to know more about how Rebecca and Will came to be placed in the Burrows family. Why were the kids never told that they were adopted? Did the Burrows have real children that were swapped with these two? Are there two Burrows kids somewhere enslaved in the Colony?
The sequel, Deeper, comes out February 3rd. You can pre-order your copy now at Amazon. I can’t wait to see what life in the Deeps is like. And what Dr. Burrows has been up to. The authors have set up quite a few problems that seem unsolvable – I can’t wait to read how they resolve them.
Questions:
How will the boys and Dr. Burrows escape from the Deeps?
If they do escape from the Colony, where will they go?
Is Rebecca all evil? Is Mrs. Burrows as useless as she seems?
What happened to Bartleby? Will we see him again?
