Audience: 9 and up

Rating: B+

Synopsis:

Fletcher “Half” Moon is a pint-sized student with grown up powers of investigation. He graduated top of his class in his online detective school and has an authentic detective’s badge. Now if only people would take him seriously. When Half Moon is hired to investigate a string of strange thefts, the plot quickly becomes larger than he is. Soon he’s accused of arson and running from the law that he’d always aspired to uphold. Worst of all, the only person who believe him is Red Sharkey, a member of the town’s most disreputable criminal family.

Chatter:

(Spoiler Alerts! ) This book is hilarious! I found it to be much funnier than Artemis Fowl (who else caught the reference to Fowl Industries? Very clever!). I was hoping that this was the first book in a series, but I couldn’t find any evidence that Colfer plans to write a sequel. Aren’t you curious about the sort of cases that Red and Half Moon would solve? Or the crazy half-detective, half-criminal methods they would use? I’m up for a few more books, anyone else?

I felt so bad for Red – he truly wants to be an honest citizen, but he doesn’t know how and no one will believe him. I liked how he wasn’t the stereotypical ‘bad kid,’ but instead a good kid trapped in a crazy family. I found May really interesting too, was she truly as ignorant as she seemed? Or as naïve? She certainly saw the best in everyone; she was the only one who saw redeeming qualities in Red. I’m curious if she’ll ever forgive Half Moon.

Les Jeunes Etudiantes crack me up – I love that they wear pink to appear harmless and cute, while they’re planning and plotting to get rid of all the boys. I think it’s hilarious that boys are targeted because they’re distracting… and because they smell. Too funny!

Questions:

How will the Sharkey’s change as a result of Red’s confessions?

Will Red ever be able to outgrow his reputation as a Sharkey troublemaker?

Will Half Moon ever be taken seriously as an investigator?

Is May right, were Half Moon’s actions worse than her father’s?
